Q&A: Aberdeen H.S. Senior Chavez Cheatham

Patch tried to keep up with the speedy football player, who also runs for the track team.

Cheatham talks about the coaching staff, his studies and the professional athlete he admires the most.

Patch: How’s life as a senior in high school?
Chavez Cheatham: Most of my attention is on track. Football is just another sport to keep me active.

Patch: You play wide receiver, safety and cornerback. What’s your favorite position to play?
CC: I enjoy playing as a cornerback the best. Being a safety is a bit harder to pull stuff off.

Patch: Do you ever get nervous before a game?
I get nervous right before the kickoff, but when I start to run down the field, the nerves are all gone.

Patch: What’s the best part of playing for Head Coach
CC: I guess it’s having a fun time with him. We don’t fool around too much, but we have fun—that coach-athlete bond. In the end we both want to work and put time in when it needs to be done.

Patch: Do you enjoy playing for ?
CC: He’s a real interesting guy. It’s hard to keep up with his standards, but I try my best. When it comes down to it, you got to do it his way.

Patch: What do you like to do when not training or playing sports?
CC: I run track and stay active. I’ll go to the weight room or play basketball. I like to go to the movies or do some trash talking online while playing Call of Duty.

Patch: What’s your favorite subject in school?
CC: I don’t really have a favorite subject. They’re all pretty much equal to me. I am taking an African American Studies class and learning a lot of things I didn’t know about my culture.

Patch: How’s the college search coming along?
CC: I’ve been looking at a lot of information on schools and will make a decision based on whether a school offers scholarships for track or football.

Patch: What do you want to study?
CC: Business management. I want to be an accountant.

Patch: Do you have a favorite football team?
CC: Right now I will have to go with Oregon. For the NFL, I’m a San Diego Chargers fan.

Patch: Do you try to replicate your game from one of the players on those teams?
CC: I would have to say Vincent Jackson. I’m trying to run routes a little smoother, be patient route and do what I can with it.

Patch: What type of music do you listen to on your iPod?
CC: Mostly rap and R&B.
