Unsung Hero Honored by The Arc NCR
Staff goes above and beyond to support people with differing abilities

The Rob Dare Unsung Hero Award is given annually to an employee or foster parent of The Arc Northern Chesapeake Region (The Arc NCR) in Aberdeen, Maryland. The winner must demonstrate a particular commitment, impact or contribution in the community; willingness to help in whatever capacity necessary and show a commitment to excellence, and positively influence a program or the organization from “behind the scenes” with a positive attitude.
The Arc NCR’s 2015 winner is Psych Support Specialist, Yota Dermatis. Yota works tirelessly to assist staff and individuals in the organization’s programs, supporting on average 40 different teams each month. She works at The Arc NCR, employment sites and in residential homes to support people in times of sorrow and crisis with a calm and positive attitude. Yota goes above and beyond to take the time to teach direct care staff counseling skills and provide in-person support.
The role of The Arc NCR’s Psych Support Specialist is to ensure all individuals served are in integrated, dignified and respectful environments and receive necessary supports in order to be active in their chosen environments and communities.
