STEM education encourages students to take an interest in STEM subjects from an early age, thereby increasing the number of students likely to pursue careers as scientists or engineers. Innovation in STEM disciplines benefits students entering the job market and ensures the United States stays competitive in the global economy.
One of the goals of the AFCEA- Aberdeen Chapter is to support STEM-related educational opportunities around the community. AFCEA coordinates and sponsors scholarships and programs that encourage STEM education, actively engaging participation from educational professionals in the local elementary, middle and high school community.

This year, the Young AFCEA-Aberdeen Chapter will donate the proceeds of the 5K, 1 Mile Walk and Kid’s Fun Run to Bel Air Middle School’s Engineering Club. Each year the Bel Air Middle School (BAMS) Engineering Club competes in several challenges both locally and nationally. The engineering club at BAMS enables students to research challenging issues we face as a society and write research papers about their findings. Students also meet with engineers to learn about potential career paths in engineering. Proceeds from this event will help the club purchase new technology and equipment, which students will use to keep electronic logs of each week’s activities, download research articles, design virtual models before building and type written reports.
