Bear Sparks Alarm After Being Spotted In Downtown Frederick

FREDERICK COUNTY, MD — Residents in downtown Frederick had a special appearance late Saturday from a black bear spotted wandering through the area.

Viral footage of the encounter showed some residents looking on in awe from their car as others opted to get a bit more up close and personal.

Officers with the Frederick County Police Department were filmed directing residents away from the bear as it moved through the downtown area along North Market Street.

One local business, Molly's Meanderings, wrote in a Facebook post that the bear was sighted around 6 p.m., just after the shop closed for the night.

"A black bear wandered by after we had closed last night! Thankfully, everyone was safe — but we think he may have been hoping to catch our summer sale!" reads the post.

It's unclear how many first responders were called in for the bear sighting, or if there were any injuries related to the incident.

Bear sightings in Frederick County aren't entirely unheard of.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources lists the county as one of the top four counties in the state to have a black bear population. The three other areas include Garrett, Allegany and Washington counties.
