Hundreds of Starbucks locations are expected to close across North America by the end of the month, it was confirmed Thursday.
A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission states Starbucks is aiming to close approximately 250 branches that the brand says are falling short of its expectations.
The looming closures amount to about 1% of the Seattle brand's 18,000 shops across North America. In Maryland, Starbucks operates more than 200 locations.
"Of the approximately $300 million of restructuring charges to be incurred, the Company anticipates that approximately $200 million will be cash charges primarily related to lease exit costs and employee separation benefits," the SEC filing states.
"The remaining $100 million will be non-cash charges due to disposal and impairment of company-operated coffeehouse assets."
Starbucks did not provide a list of coffee shops that it plans to close in its announcement. However, at least two Starbucks locations in Montgomery County were confirmed as closing.

Patch has reached out to Starbucks to confirm whether other stores in Maryland will be impacted.
In a letter to investors, CEO Mike Grams acknowledged that "closing any coffeehouse is a difficult decision," but that it was being made to ensure that shops are "a place customers love and partners are proud to work."
Grams said Starbucks would identify "transfer opportunities" to employees "wherever possible," as well as severance support for workers "unable to place in another coffeehouse."
The Maryland Department of Labor has not yet published any layoff notices in connection with the Starbucks closures.
The latest announcement marks the second round of closures under Grams, who took the CEO post in 2025. The previous closures impacted 657 stores across North America and Europe.
