HAGERSTOWN, MD — An investigation by the Maryland Attorney General's Office is underway after a man was fatally shot by Hagerstown Police, authorities said Saturday.

Officials responded to the scene shortly before 5 p.m. and encountered an unidentified man inside the apartment, ultimately prompting first responders to call in backup from the Hagerstown Police Department.

The release did not state why the man was inside the apartment or the reasoning behind the police response.

After a perimeter was established by police officers, investigators said the man ran toward officers and was hit with a Taser after he failed to follow verbal commands. Some time later, according to the release, officers discharged their firearms.

At the scene, authorities recovered two knives. The man was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

No officers were injured during the altercation.

Anyone with information or video related to the case is urged to contact OAG officials with the Independent Investigations Division. Investigators can be reached by either emailing IID@oag.maryland.gov or calling (410) 576-7070.
