Sunny fall weather is taking a quick hiatus in Maryland as a cold front brings rain and thunderstorms ahead of the weekend.
Rain will move into the state overnight Thursday and linger through Friday as storms develop.
National Weather Service forecasts indicate mostly cloudy conditions will shift to scattered showers and thunderstorms after 3 p.m. Thursday, ahead of the afternoon commute.
However, that won't be the only taste of inclement weather.
Additional rounds of rain showers and thunderstorms, with varying intensity, are expected to develop through 4 a.m. Friday.
Residents can also expect wind gusts of up to 23 mph and temperatures peaking in the mid-70s before plummeting to the low 60s on Thursday.
Active Alerts:
By Friday, before 8 a.m., forecasters say showers are likely to affect commuters during the morning rush, with patchy fog also possible.
Officials say showers could disrupt outdoor activities Friday afternoon, with a 60% chance. By nightfall, the rain is no longer a factor.
Rainfall totals for Thursday range from a quarter to a half inch, while Friday's forecast totals range from a tenth to a quarter of an inch.
Expect sunny weather to return to Maryland by Saturday, but keep a light jacket nearby. Conditions will feel a bit chillier, with temperatures forecast to peak in the 60s and wind gusts up to 24 mph.
While the winds will be out of the region by Saturday night, the chilly weather is staying put.
The remainder of the weekend and the next several days through Wednesday are expected to offer up clear, sunny skies. Forecasts show temperatures will stay in the 60s before plunging to the low 40s by nightfall.
