A St. Mary's County man died Saturday when a fireworks mortar tube detonated as he held it, according to the state fire marshal's office.

LEONARDTOWN, MD — A St. Mary's County man died early Saturday when a fireworks mortar exploded as he held the launch tube, according to the state fire marshal's office. This is the second fireworks-related death this year in Maryland.
The accident happened in the 19900 block of Poplar Hill Creek Lane in Leonardtown about 2:45 a.m. First responders said William Michael McFann, 26, of Piney Point was pronounced deceased on the scene.
Investigators said McFann had placed a fireworks mortar tube on his upper chest and attempted to ignite it. The mortar then exploded, killing him.

"A family's life has been changed forever, and this is a tragic reminder that fireworks should be left to the professionals. I've said it before, and I will say it again: the safest way to enjoy fireworks is to attend one of the many public fireworks displays throughout the state," said State Fire Marshal Brian S. Geraci.
On July 5, Damon Hammond, 20, died in Waldorf after a mortar he was holding exploded, causing fatal chest and hand injuries.
