Hail, 65 Mph Wind Possible Sunday Across MD

Much of Maryland, including the Washington area, is under a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. Sunday, with quarter-sized hail possible, and wind gusts as high as 65 mph likely, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch was issued shortly before 5 p.m., according to the service.

“The combination of a surge of warm, humid air late today and an approaching cold front could set the stage for scattered strong to severe thunderstorms in the DC region,” Capital Weather reported.

Some areas could get over an inch of rain on Sunday, according to the outlet.

“There is an outside chance of a brief tornado or two, particularly in Northern Virginia,” Capital Weather reported. “… There is also a small chance of localized flash flooding if storms develop and repeatedly track over the same areas. Atmospheric moisture levels are forecast to soar to unusually high levels.”

The action may not end Sunday, with a chance of showers and storms possible mid-afternoon Monday due to a nearby lingering cold front, according to the outlet.
