MARYLAND — Sen. Chris Van Hollen and incumbent Maryland members of the U.S. House have won their primaries for a chance at another term in the general election. Dozens of Democratic and Republican candidates were on Tuesday's ballot.
Sen. Chris Van Hollen, a Democrat, is aiming for a second term in the U.S. Senate with one member of his own party challenging him, along with 10 Republican candidates. The Associated Press called Van Hollen the winner of his race at 8:48 p.m. with 84.4 percent of the votes to 15.6 percent for Michelle Smith.

The lone Republican in the Congressional delegation, Rep. Andy Harris, is also a winner, facing no GOP opposition in his 1st District race. He will be challenged by Heather Mizeur, who won the Democratic nomination for the 1st Congressional District, AP said.
Democrat Jamie Raskin — in the spotlight in the past year for his work to impeach former President Donald Trump and to investigate the Jan. 6 Capitol riot — has won the nomination for his 8th Congressional District seat, AP said.

Incumbent Democrat and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer has won his primary and will be challenged by Republican Chris Palombi.
Incumbent Kweisi Mfume won the nomination for U.S. House in Maryland's 7th Congressional District, while incumbent Dutch Ruppersberger won his race in the 2nd Congressional District, AP reported.
Incumbent David Trone will be the Democratic nominee in the 6th Congressional House District, AP said, while incumbent John Sarbanes won his 3rd District race.
In the 6th House District, the AP said Neil Parrott won the Republican nomination to take on Trone.
Many races remained too close to call late Tuesday night.
There will be some changes in the Congressional delegation come fall, since Rep. Anthony Brown chose not to seek re-election for his District 4 seat and is instead running for Maryland attorney general.
Winners in some races might not be known until later this week. State law says mail-in ballots cannot be counted until Thursday.
The Maryland State Board of Elections expects to certify the final results during the week of Aug. 8. Officials will announce the unofficial early voting and election day results on July 19, but they still have to count the mail-in, dropbox and provisional ballots.
That means the final and official results will come a few weeks after voters hit the polls.
One of the GOP candidates for Senate was arrested Friday for lying about child sex trafficking taking place at an adult bookstore in Harford County, authorities said. Ryan Dark White — also known as Dr. Jon McGreevey, 54, of Baltimore, which is the name under which he appears on primary election ballots as a candidate for the Senate — was charged with making a false statement, according to a news release from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.
