MD Weather: Thunderstorms, Large Hail Possible Saturday

MD counties under a hazardous weather outlook face thunderstorms and large hail through Saturday night, the National Weather Service said.

MARYLAND — Thunderstorms will cool down Maryland by Monday after a hot week, forecasters said, with thunderstorms, large hail and strong winds all possible through Saturday night.

Severe thunderstorms have popped up across the Baltimore region, producing quarter-size hail and 60 mph wind gusts, and are moving to the southeast, the National Weather Service said.

A flood warning is in effect until 9:30 p.m. after slow moving storms have dropped 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain on northern Anne Arundel County. Localized flooding is possible. Flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations is imminent or occurring.

Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are possible in the warned area. Some locations that will experience flooding include Severn, Riviera Beach, Baltimore, Washington Airport, Glen Burnie, Severna Park, Odenton, Pasadena, Lake Shore, Ferndale, Fort Meade, South Gate, Green Haven, Linthicum, Gambrills and Harmans.

As of 4 p.m. showers and storms continued to move through central and southern Maryland, along with the District of Columbia and Northern Virginia. With strongest storms are forecast through 8 p.m.

"Hail and heavy rain are the primary threats with these storms, along with brief gusty winds," the Weather Service said. "Storms will continue through early evening before diminishing tonight."

The counties under a hazardous weather outlook are: Cecil, Baltimore, Prince George's, Anne Arundel, Charles, St. Marys, Calvert, Montgomery, Howard and Harford.

Saturday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 76. South wind around 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 11pm, then a slight chance of showers between 11pm and 2am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 63. West wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Sunday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 84. Calm wind becoming southeast 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 2am, then a slight chance of showers between 2am and 5am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59. Southeast wind around 9 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Monday: A slight chance of showers between 11am and 2pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. West wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 20%.
