Registration Now Open For Free Girls Hockey Event In MD

The first-ever DMV Girls Hockey Weekend will let girls try the sport for a few hours at no cost.

Registration is now open for the first-ever DMV Girls Hockey weekend in Maryland.

The event will take place at 18 rinks across Maryland and Virginia on Sept. 12 and 13. It’s an expansion of the previous event, DMV Girls Try Hockey For Free Day.

According to a news release, the event is intended to introduce girls ages four through nine to hockey, at no cost to parents. The event is a joint effort between the Washington Capitals, Monumental Sports & Entertainment (MSE) Foundation, the Potomac Valley Amateur Hockey Association and local youth hockey organizations.

The organizers say the girls hockey event aligns with USA Hockey’s Try Hockey for Free program, which also gives local kids a chance to try hockey for a couple of hours at no cost.

The first joint event by these organizers to introduce girls to hockey was the 2023 DMV Girls Try Hockey for Free Day. It included 16 local rinks or clubs.

Last year, according to organizers, 18 local rinks or clubs participated, and more than 630 girls tried hockey for the first time.

Training and coaching hub Athletes Untapped ranks ice hockey as among the most expensive youth sports.
