MARYLAND — Candy sales are expected to top jewelry and other popular traditional purchases this Valentine's Day, according to the National Retail Federation. In fact, Americans are predicted to shell out a whopping $1.8 billion on sweets for the holiday in 2019.
Around Valentine's Day, consumers typically buy 58 million pounds of chocolate; 43 percent of the purchasers revealed they were buying the sweets for themselves.

While conversation hearts have climbed the rankings over the past decade, they are no match for heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, which reign supreme in the most states. Not to mention, in 2019 Sweethearts conversation hearts are predicted to take an 80 percent hit in sales as the product's biggest distributor, Necco, closed its doors last year.
