12 Maryland Companies Make Fortune 500 List For 2017

Fortune Magazine is out with its coveted Fortune 500 list for 2017, and of the companies on the list, which represent two-thirds of the United States GDP with $12 trillion in revenues, 12 of them have headquarters based in Maryland.

Companies are ranked by total revenues, and topping the list nationally is Walmart, followed by Berkshire Hathaway and Apple. Walmart is also the biggest employer on the list with 2.3 million employees, while Apple is the most profitable company on the list.

While 15 companies dropped off the list, there were 20 newcomers on the list, including Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla. Other than clearing the bar of at least $5.1 billion in annual revenue, Fortune explains how newcomers make it on the list.

The 2017 list also includes 32 female CEOs, which Fortune says is the highest number of female CEOs to ever make the list.
