5 Students Win Scholarships From Dr. Ben Carson, His Wife In Anne Arundel County
Five Anne Arundel County students won scholarships from Dr. Ben Carson and his wife. Carson is a former surgeon and presidential candidate.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Five Anne Arundel County Public School students won scholarships from retired surgeon and former presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy Carson.
These students each won a $1,000 college scholarship after being named a Carson Scholar:
- Addison Fowler (5th grader at Jacobsville Elementary School in Pasadena)
- Jack Mewett (8th grader at Crofton Middle School in Gambrills)
- Natalie Niles (8th grader at Magothy River Middle School in Arnold)
- Terae Raymond (5th grader at Solley Elementary School in Glen Burnie)
- Piper Wood (5th grader at Freetown Elementary School in Glen Burnie)
These students were among the 482 nationwide to take home the honor this year.

Carson Scholars must be in grades 4 through 11 and hold at least a 3.75 GPA.
Scholarship winners will also get a certificate, a medal and an invitation to a regional awards banquet. That ceremony is scheduled for April 30 at Martin's West in Windsor Mill.

"Each scholarship awarded brings the organization one step closer to co-founders Dr. and Mrs.
Ben Carson’s dream of naming a Carson Scholar at every school in the country," the Carson Scholar Foundation said in a March 20 press release announcing the winners.
Another 823 students renewed their Carson Scholar status this year by maintaining their academic qualifications.
Ten of those renewed Carson Scholars are from Anne Arundel County. Those honorees are:
- Indu Bodala (2-time winner, 11th grader at Glen Burnie High School in Glen Burnie )
- Mia Chapman (5-time winner, 12th grader at Broadneck High School in Annapolis)
- Heather Doyen (7-time winner, 12th grader at Broadneck High School in Annapolis)
- Liam Doyen (5-time winner, 12th grader at Broadneck High School in Annapolis)
- Caleb Oh (8-time winner, 12th grader at South River High School in Edgewater)
- Joshua Oh (5-time winner, 9th grader at Crofton High School in Gambrills)
- Corinne Rivera (2-time winner, 6th grader at Chesapeake Bay Middle School in Pasadena)
- Rebecca Sawyer (2-time winner, 8th grader at Magothy River Middle School in Arnold)
- Aneka Velthuis (2-time winner, 12th grader at Old Mill High School in Millersville)
- Olivia West (4-time winner, 11th grader at Broadneck High School in Annapolis)
"These previous scholarship recipients have maintained high academic standards and a strong commitment to their communities," the release said.
The Carson Scholars Fund, Inc. is a nonprofit charity that was founded in 1994.
Dr. Ben Carson was a pediatric neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins. He also ran for president as a Republican in 2016. The following year, he was appointed secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development by former President Donald Trump.
