ANNAPOLIS, MD — A protest for abortion rights is scheduled for Friday evening in downtown Annapolis. The rally starts at 5 p.m. in The People's Park, located at 43 Calvert Street. Speakers will include elected officials, medical professionals and women’s rights activists.

Mayor Gavin Buckley announced the event in a press release reassuring his commitment to abortion rights. The gathering will come hours after the Supreme Court of the United States overturned Roe v. Wade, the precedent that previously allowed abortions to continue nationwide.

Buckley called the decision "a devastating blow to women’s rights."

"While none of us are surprised, we remain deeply disturbed by the Court’s willingness to overturn precedent," the mayor said. “I stand with all women today who are fighting this assault on their right to health care and privacy."

Buckley urged Congress to pass legislation protecting abortion rights on the federal level. He also asked voters to elect politicians who support abortion rights.

Twenty-six states are likely to ban or restrict abortions, but they will probably continue in deep-blue Maryland.

“Maryland will continue to be a strongly pro-choice state, but we won’t walk away from supporting all women across America whose rights have been stripped away with one Supreme Court decision," Buckley said. "Consider me an ally in the fight.”
