ANNAPOLIS, MD — Fans of the Swedish furniture store IKEA will soon have to drive a bit further to stock up on meatballs and home furnishings as the company announces closures across the region.
IKEA confirmed to Patch that it will be closing one site each in D.C., Maryland and Virginia. In Maryland, the impact is hitting residents in Anne Arundel County.
Officials said the Annapolis Plan and Order branch will be closing effective Oct. 30, with shoppers now being directed back to the brand's College Park location at 10100 Baltimore Ave.
Located inside the Annapolis Harbour Center at 2512 A Solomons Island Road, the closing IKEA site is a nearly 30-minute drive to the College Park store, depending on traffic.
IKEA's plan and order sites serve as showroom storefronts to help residents design larger home projects while also being a convenient pick-up location for online orders. The stores also offer a selection of items sold at their larger branches, including some frozen foods.
The company did not state the reason behind its planned closures, noting that it was continuing to "test, explore and develop new ways for customers to meet IKEA, while investing in home delivery, pick-up services, and our online experience."
"Customers will be able to continue their planning projects in-person at other in-market locations or online with a remote planner," reads the statement provided to Patch.
Around the D.C. region, closures will take effect at the plan and order sites in Georgetown and Fairfax on Oct. 18 and Nov. 30, respectively. Impacted workers will be able to relocate to IKEA's locations in College Park, Baltimore, or Woodbridge, Virginia.
