Annapolis Bicyclist Dies From Injuries In July 4 Crash With Car

A 27-year-old Annapolis woman was listed in critical condition after being hit by a car July 4. She has since passed away from her injuries.

ANNAPOLIS, MD -- A bicyclist from Annapolis passed away July 7, several days after she was hit by a car while riding her bike in Bethany Beach, Delaware. Kelly Margaret Scruggs, 27, was struck by a passing car on Coastal Highway in South Bethany at approximately 10:15 p.m. on July 4.

According to the Delaware State Police, Scruggs had ridden west across the median of Coast Highway and entered the road's southbound lanes, then was hit by a car also heading southbound. The front end of the car struck Scruggs on the right side and knocked her onto the pavement.

Scruggs was transported to Beebe Hospital in Lewes, Delaware, before being transferred to Christiana Hospital in Wilmington in critical condition. The police reported stated that Scruggs was not wearing a helmet and did not have functioning lights on her bicycle.

The driver of the 2005 Toyota Sienna that hit Scruggs, a 50-year-old from Red Lion, Pa., was uninjured and not impaired, police said. According to her obituary, Scruggs was a social media designer at Crosby Marketing Communications.
