Annapolis McDonald's to Honor County Teacher of the Year

Christina Houstain, head of the social studies department at Broadneck High School in Annapolis, will be honored at the Oct. 7 fundraiser.

The 2014-2015 Anne Arundel County Teacher of the Year, Christina Houstain, will be honored Tuesday by the McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Greater Baltimore.

Houstian is the Social Studies department chair at Broadneck High School in Annapolis and has taught U.S. government, art history and world history for 14 years. She is advisor to the Broadneck Key Club, a student group that collects food, serves dinner monthly at a homeless shelter, and participates in service activities. Certified in social studies and art, she has also worked as a museum curator.

The McDonald’s McTeacher of the Year Night Celebration and Fundraiser will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at McDonald’s, 1450 White Hall Road in Annapolis.

McDonald’s McTeacher of the Year Night provides members of Broadneck High School and residents of Anne Arundel County the opportunity to thank Houstain for her commitment to education, according to a news release. The company will donate a portion of all sales earned during the event to Houstain’s school and will present Houstain with several surprise gifts.

Community members, parents and students are encouraged to attend to celebrate and to help raise money for Broadneck High School.

On Oct. 7, McDonald’s will also honor six other Teacher of the Year nominees from counties in the Greater Baltimore area with special “McTeacher” of the Year celebrations. McDonald’s annually honors Maryland’s Teachers of the Year as the official sponsor of The Teacher of the Year Annual Cruise and Gala and will be presenting the 2014-2015 Maryland Teacher of the Year winner with an Apple iPad and a $10,000 donation to their school at the Gala on Oct. 10.

Houstian graduated with a B.A. in history and art history from Bryn Mawr College in 1989, and received an M.A. in art history in 1994 from New York University.
