Anne Arundel County Public Schools Make Monday Weather Decision

A freezing rain advisory for the area has prompted Anne Arundel County Public Schools to delay the start of classes on Monday, Jan. 12.

The school system has announced that all schools and offices will open two hours late on Monday.

An alert from school offices say there will be no morning half-day pre-kindergarten or ECI classes. Students in full-day pre-kindergarten classes will have class, and should report two hours later than normal.

School system leaders will assess road and school lot conditions throughout the night and into the morning. Parents and employees are warned that they should be prepared if further changes need to be made to the school day.

Many Anne Arundel County parents were unhappy last week that school wasn’t canceled on Tuesday as snow fell. The superintendent says he understands their frustration.

Weather forecast for AA County

The National Weather Service has issued a freezing rain advisory for Anne Arundel County starting at 10 p.m. Sunday through 9 a.m. Monday.

Forecasters expect less than a tenth of an inch of ice.

Temperatures drop to 32 Sunday night, then look for a high of 39 degress on Monday.

Forecasters are predicting a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain to begin after midnight and change over to rain between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Monday morning. Rain will continue throughout the day and should end by 6 p.m. Monday evening.

Untreated roads, sidewalks and vehicles could see a thin glaze of ice, the National Weather Service warns. Some surfaces may become icy even with temperatures slightly above freezing, the weather service warns, due to the recent below-freezing temperatures. If you’re on the roadways, be especially careful in areas that are typically shaded, as well as bridges.

The wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain may cause icy road conditions for the morning commute. Drivers are encouraged to follow the safety tips listed below when driving:
• Add extra time for traveling;
• Drive slowly and stay alert;
• Keep a safe distance between you and the car in front of you; and
• Use caution when driving over bridges, ramps and overpasses.
