Anne Arundel Police Union Donates to Ferguson Fund

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 70, the union representing Anne Arundel County police officers, has donated $1,070 to an online fund supporting the officer involved in a fatal shooting in Ferguson, MO.

Investigation is ongoing for the case involving officer Darren Wilson, who reportedly fatally shot 18-year-old Michael Brown.

O’Brien Atkinson, an Anne Arundel County police officer and president of Police Lodge 70, told the Baltimore Sun that members of the union wanted to support officers who have been working long shifts due to protests over the shooting on Aug. 9. But the national FOP suggested donating to the Support Officer Darren Wilson GoFundMe instead.

“It’s not about anything more than making sure that our fellow officer has due process, which sometimes is hard to come by when you have a media stir and a lot of political attention,” Atkinson told the Sun.

The $1,070 donation is the largest single donation on the site so far.

The GoFundMe account has raised $218,562 as of Friday morning. A message written on the GoFundMe site says, “All proceeds will be sent directly to Darren Wilson and his family for any financial needs they may have, including legal fees.”
