Are Maryland Schools Slipping? Rank Falls In New Survey

A new study puts Maryland in the top 20 of quality/safety rankings for schools.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — As Maryland parents prepare to send their kids back to school in a few weeks, a new ranking says their school systems have lost ground when compared with those in other parts of the country, according to a new study released by WalletHub. The state ranked No. 19th best overall in a new study published by the personal-finance website, compared with a No. 16 ranking by the same experts a year ago.

Personal finance website WalletHub used 21 metrics to measure quality and safety, giving Maryland its top 20 overall ranking for 2017. The analysis accounts for performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials, among other factors.

Massachusetts finished with a total quality/safety score of 78.16. Second-place New Jersey had a 66.92, and third-place New Hampshire and Wisconsin had scores of 64.25.
