Bay Bridge Saw 13-Mile Delay On Labor Day: Officials

MARYLAND — At one point on Labor Day, state officials said delays around the Bay Bridge were so bad, they advised drivers to delay their trips if they planned to take US 50 west.

Traffic saw a spike about 5:45 p.m. on Monday, when the Maryland Transportation Authority reported there were 13 miles of delays.

Earlier in the day, officials advised people to delay their trip if it involved the westbound span of the bridge

"Stay later if you can if traveling WB US 50," the Maryland Transportation Authority reported around 4:15 p.m. "Delays are present from MD 404."

Delays were around 12 miles at 3:45 p.m., according to authorities.

It was a 10-mile backup before 6 p.m. and an 8-mile jam before 6:30 p.m., officials said.

Here was the progression toward zero backups by 9:30 p.m., according to the Maryland Transportation Authority:

• 6:32 p.m. — 7-mile delay
• 7:09 p.m. — 6.5-mile delay
• 7:17 p.m. — 5.5-mile delay
• 8:08 p.m. — 4.5-mile delay
• 8:19 p.m. — 3.5-mile delay
• 8:38 p.m. — 2.5-mile delay
• 8:46 p.m. — 1-mile delay
• 9:15 p.m. — 0.5-mile delay

By 9:30 p.m., officials said all backups had cleared prior to the Bay Bridge.

Before the holiday, the Maryland Transportation Authority gave drivers a heads up that the best times to travel the Bay Bridge were before 8 a.m. and after 10 p.m. on Labor Day.
