Budget, Athlete Concussions on Next Board of Education Agenda

The Sept. 3 meeting will focus on budgets and student head injuries. A public workshop on the schools budget will be held Sept. 16.

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will receive Superintendent George Arlotto’s proposed Fiscal Year 2016 Capital Budget and will hear a presentation on the school system’s efforts in addressing concussions and suspected head injuries at its next meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, September 3, 2014, in the Board Room at the Parham Building, 2644 Riva Road, Annapolis.

The Board will meet at 8:30 a.m. to vote to go into closed session, during which time it will discuss confidential matters as permitted by the Maryland Open Meetings Act including, but not limited to, legal advice, personnel, and negotiations. Closed session is not open to the public. The general session of the meeting, which is open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m.

The capital budget establishes funding priorities for construction projects at schools across the county. The Board will conduct a public workshop on the budget beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 16, in the Board Room. No public testimony will be taken at the workshop, but testimony will be taken at a public hearing scheduled to be held before the Board takes up initial adoption at its regularly scheduled September 17 meeting. That meeting begins at 7 p.m.

Once adopted, the plan will be submitted to the State of Maryland for funding consideration. It will also be part of the school system’s overall FY2016 budget request, to be forwarded to the County Executive in February 2015.
