All are
invited to hear St. Anne’s Episcopal Church’s historian, Eric Fredland, talk at
the church’s fall Adult Forum at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the church’s
Parish Hall at 199 Duke of Gloucester St., Annapolis, Md. His topic is
“Pre-revolutionary and Revolutionary History/Disestablishment/Vestry Act in
Maryland.”
Fredland
served as St. Anne’s archivist from 2014 - 2025 and wrote a book, “The Church
in the Circle: Essays on the History of St. Anne’s Annapolis,” which was
printed by the church in 2017. He continues to write monthly “From the
Archives” essays which are emailed to the congregation and others interested in
St. Anne’s history.
During his
talk he will delve into what the governance of the church was like before and
after the Revolution. What did it mean to be Anglican? What did the Vestry Act
mean to the church? How much influence did the state have over the church and
for how long?
This forum is the second of eight forums that will focus on the historic and contemporary roles of the church in American political life. The next one will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 11, at the Parish Hall. The guest speaker will be Heather Miller Rubens, executive director and Roman Catholic scholar of the Institute for Islamic, Christian, and Jewish Studies. Her topic will be “No Church, No State? Interreligious Experiments in Building a Shared Civic Life.”
