Calling all Lab Owners

If your lab looks like the doggy in the window, this contest is for you.

This weekend, The Black Dog General Store on Main Street is running a contest. If your dog looks like "black dog" it could be selected as the next cover model for The 2011 Black Dog Catalog.

The store, which first opened in Vineyard Haven, MA, is running the contest at each of its locations. The winner of each of the 18 Black Dog locations gets a gift basket of dog toys and the chance to be featured in the store's catalog and website.

Heidi Schlossman, one of the managers at the Main Street store in Annapolis, said once the owners bring their dogs in, employees will take a picture of both the front view and the traditional "black dog" side view. She said each dog that participates gets a bag of bones baked fresh from their bakery on Martha's Vineyard.

Schlossman said they are looking specifically for black labs with a red collar and a touch of white fur.

Schlossman said store employees narrow down the dogs who most closely match the picture and then select judges at random to make the final ruling.

"We flag down like three or four people, that's what we've done the last couple of years and have total random people select the winner," Schlossman said.

The contest starts Friday and runs through Monday, Oct. 11. The winner is announced online. Visit the store's website or stop by for more information about the contest.
