Camel Tramples Circus Worker In Maryland

A circus worker was flown to a hospital after he was bitten and trampled by a camel, Charles County emergency officials say.

LA PLATA, MD — A worker for the Lewis and Clark Circus was flown to an area hospital after he was trampled and bitten by one of the circus' camels, reports say. The 57-year-old man suffered significant bleeding from a head wound and had leg injuries, but he is expected to recover, Charles County EMS said.

The incident happened Friday at the Charles County Fairgrounds in La Plata, WJLA reports. Because of problems with the permits the circus needed, the show did not go on.

Fairgrounds president J.T. Hindle told WTOP the man was the camel’s handler in the South Carolina-based circus. Charles County Volunteer Fire and Emergency Medical Services officials said the camel was being unloaded from a horse trailer when it trampled and bit the handler.
