Defense Highway In Crownsville To Shut Down In June, July

Defense Highway between Crownsville Road/South Haven Road and Rutland Road will close two weekends so the state can replace aging culverts.

CROWNSVILLE, MD -- The Maryland Department of Transportation's state highway administration advises motorists to expect closures and detours June 28-July 1 and July 12-July 15 as it works to upgrade aging culverts and hopefully reduce flooding issues along Defense Highway between Crownsville Road/South Haven Road and Rutland Road. Nearly 8,000 motorists travel on this section of Defense Highway every day.

Four culverts will be replaced along MD 450 (Defense Highway) over tributaries to Bacon Ridge Branch, a tributary to the South River. The project calls for replacing the current culverts with new reinforced concrete pipes, completing necessary paving and restriping, and installing new guardrail. The new culverts will be larger to accommodate a greater volume of water under the roadway to reduce flooding incidents, stated the Maryland Department of Transportation.

The first closure will take place Friday, June 28, from 11:45 p.m. until Monday, July 1, at 5 a.m. The second closure will happen from Friday, July 12, at 11:45 p.m. until Monday, July 15, at 5 a.m. According to the Maryland Department of Transportation, motorists will be detoured to US 50/US 301 (John Hanson Highway) and MD 424 (Davidsonville Road).
