Donations Pour In For Capital Gazette Victims, Future Journalists

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Less than a month after the senseless killing of five Capital Gazette employees, the generosity of friends, family and strangers has amassed nearly $700,000 in donations to two separate funds set up after the June 28 mass shooting.

The Baltimore Sun reports the Capital Gazette Family Fund, set up to help the victims' families, has raised about $560,000 from over 5,000 donors. The Capital Gazette Memorial Scholarship, set up to assist aspiring journalists, is up to $125,000 from only 188 donors, Melissa Curtin of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County said.

The outpouring of support doesn't end there. The Michael and Jacky Ferro Family Foundation is matching up to $1 million for every dollar donated to the Capital Gazette Family Fund, the Sun reports.

Good Charlotte is also headlining a concert to benefit the Capital Gazette Family Fund:

Artist and musician Aaron Yealdhall made a "Press On" logo in support of the Family Fund. The Sun reported he had to stop taking online orders for shirts and sticker packs because he's been overwhelmed. Yealdhall estimates he's raised over $30,000.

Journalists from around the country trekked to Annapolis to help the Gazette produce their daily newspaper. The very day of the shooting, Capital Gazette showed its dedication and defiance of danger, tweeting "Yes, we're putting out a damn paper tomorrow."
