Annapolis Open - Officer Grant Turner Memorial Baseball Tournament

The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund is pleased to announce that the 7th Annual Annapolis Open® Officer Grant Turner Memorial Baseball Tournament will be played Friday, March 23rd through Sunday March 25th at 12 parks throughout Anne Arundel County.  The tournament, hosted by the Maryland Diamond Umpire Association (MDUA), General’s Highway Athletic Association (GHAA), and the Maryland Transportation Authority Police Department (MdTA), has grown to be the largest preseason youth baseball tournament on the East coast, hosting over 170 U9 thru U14 teams for a fun-filled weekend focusing on teamwork, sportsmanship and passion for the game of baseball.

 

The tournament is headquartered at General’s Highway Corridor Park (1758 Crownsville, Rd, Crownsville, MD 21032), where an Opening Ceremony will be hosted on Saturday, March 24th at 1pm.  Family fun on Saturday includes a Police Expo by MdTA with tours of the Mobile Command Center, Honor Guard, K-9 Unit, Motors Unit and Civil Air Patrol displays and activities.  In addition, the Anne Arundel Medical Center Bloodmobile will be there to accept blood donations in honor of Officer Grant Turner.  “When I see and feel the energy that comes from this weekend, it gives me hope,” says Captain Richard Perry from MdTA. “They say out of tragedy comes good.  If you come out and experience what this weekend offers, take my word for it, you will see the good.”

The family of Officer Turner hosts a scholarship fundraising event the evening of Saturday, March 24th at 6pm at the Annapolis Elks Lodge, #622 (2517 Solomons Island Rd, Annapolis, MD 21401).  The event is free of charge and is open to the public.  Enjoy food & cash bar, DJ, silent auction, sports memorabilia auction, and a slide show tribute to Officer Turner.

The Annapolis Open Tournament is the largest fundraising event for the Officer Grant Turner Scholarship Fund.  The fund has awarded $18,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors in AA County over the past six years.  Future long-term goals for the fund include providing an annual scholarship to every high school in the county.  Joe Weiss, former President of GHAA proudly states, “Our goals for the future are much higher, because Grant’s goals were high, and we strive to be like him in all that we do.”  Donations for the scholarship fund should be made out to Officer Grant Turner Scholarship Fund and mailed to:  Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, 914 Bay Ridge Road, Suite 220, Annapolis, MD  21403.

 

 

About the Officer Grant Turner Scholarship Fund

The Officer Grant Turner Scholarship Fund, established in 2006, provides scholarship opportunities for high school seniors at six schools in Anne Arundel County and children of MdTA officers.  The athletic scholarships are awarded to individuals displaying the greatest perseverance and teamwork within their sport.  The scholarships honor Officer Grant Turner, a young man whose passion for life and love of sports extended into his work with Maryland Transportation Authority Police and the Maryland Diamond Umpire Association.  The Officer Grant Turner Memorial Scholarship Fund is a component fund of the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County, a 501 (c)(3) public charity.
