HIGHLAND BEACH, MD — A Naval Academy firefighter sustained minor injuries while battling a house fire Jan. 4 in Highland Beach. The fire broke out at the single-family one-story home located at 1203 Bay Ave. shortly after 8:30 a.m. An estimated 30 firefighters from Anne Arundel County, Annapolis and Naval Support Activity fire departments responded to help battle the blaze that took 30 minutes to contain.

Neighbors called 911 to report seeing flames at the back of the home. Because the community doesn't have any fire hydrants, firefighters from responding departments had to pull water from the bay to fight the fire. The sole occupant of the home wasn't present at the time of the fire and has since been displaced. The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the Anne Arundel County Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit.
