Hammer Pounding Mistaken for Shots Fired in Apartment

Annapolis Police received reports that gunshots were fired in an apartment building, but the noise was a man hammering on a door.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Luckily for the residents of an apartment building in the 1000 block of Norman Drive in Annapolis, a report of possible gunshots fired inside the building turned out to be a mistake. Not as lucky: the resident of an apartment where an accused burglar pounded on a door repeatedly to break in, which was the source of the loud noises.

Annapolis Police were called to the building between 6 and 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a report of possible shots fired inside. Instead, officers found damage to the door to one of the apartments and determined the occupant of another apartment used a hammer to enter an apartment and then damage a TV.

The suspect, John Higgins, 63, of Annapolis, was arrested and charged with burglary and destruction of property, police say. He is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bond.
