Here's The Best Steakhouse In Maryland: Daily Meal

The food website The Daily Meal has picked the best steakhouse in every state. Here's where to find Maryland's best cut of beef.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — It's hard to beat a juicy, flavor-packed, grilled-just-right steak for dinner. If you are yearning for a great cut of beef, the food website The Daily Meal has just released its picks of the Best Steakhouse in Every State.

The best place for a steak in Maryland is Lewnes' Steakhouse, 401 Fourth St. in Annapolis, says the website. Meaty offerings on the menu include a New York strip, porterhouse, two sizes of filet mignon, and a ribeye, plus lamb chops, lobster and crabcakes.

Here's how The Daily Meal folks describe the range of fantastic steakhouses nationwide: "There are the cavernous, inexpensive Wild West establishments where everyone seems to be wearing a Stetson and a pair of cowboy boots; the power-broker-with-an-expense-account clubhouses; the joints that serve steak at the bar but don’t quite fall into the bar-and-grill category; and the modernist steakhouses that turn all these conventions upside down. ... When it comes down to it, it’s all about the steak. And from ripping-hot broilers to mesquite grills, these restaurants do it right."

The roots of Lewnes' Steakhouse go back to 1906 when a 14-year-old Sam Lewnes immigrated from Sparta, Greece, to Brooklyn, New York, where he sold peanuts and popcorn from a push cart. He moved to Annapolis to marry, and with his brother-in-law ran the Palace Confectionary on Main Street. With various family members he ran a variety of eateries in the area, including a concession stand at Horn Point Beach and one at the East Port Fire Department carnivals, according to the restaurant's website.

In 1947, his eldest son George and his brother Lou, took over Sam’s Corner and named it Lewnes’ Bar & Grill. Other restaurants in the extended family included the Bridgeview Restaurant, which expanded and renamed the Yardarm. Sam's grandson, Charlie, and his wife Pam, and sons Sam and Mack, extensively remodeled and reopened Sam’s Corner in 1989 in honor of Sam Lewnes.

Of Lewnes' Steakhouse The Daily Meal editors said:

"In business since 1921 and in its current incarnation since 1989, this refined and classic institution is an Annapolis, Maryland, legend. The focused menu at Lewnes’ is full of all the steakhouse classics: start with shrimp cocktail or stellar jumbo lump crab balls (this is Maryland, after all), follow it up with a New York strip or rib-eye with some hash browns and sautéed spinach, and chase it down with a selection from their ample wine list. A couple Greek specialties, like garides scortholemono (Aegean-style shrimp) and a popular Greek salad, are nods to the owners’ heritage."
