How Do Homeowners Know When to Replace Their Windows?

Spring is right around the corner and for many homeowners that means it is time to start planning home improvement projects for the warmer months. Window replacement is consistently one of the most valuable remodeling projects for the home, and there are several signs to help determine the best timing for installing new windows.

“The colder temperatures in recent months may have highlighted any potential problems or concerns with homeowners’ existing windows,” says Brad Yourkavitch, vice president and general manager of K.C. Company Inc.–Pella® Windows and Doors. “Higher heating costs and drafts in the home are a couple of indicators that your windows may need to be replaced.”

The Annapolis area has above average amounts of precipitation in February alone. The increased amount of rain and snow can affect the soil underneath a home’s foundation and in extreme weather conditions could cause shifting to occur. Foundation problems can impact many areas of the house including the efficiency of doors and windows which may be harder to close and shut properly.

Pella offers these guidelines for when to consider window replacement:

  • Poor performance — opening and closing is a difficult task; air leaks in, out or around the window; condensation or fogging occurs on or between glass panes; windows are painted or nailed shut and virtually impossible to open
  • Looks — chipping, deterioration or water stains of the window or the area around the window (inside or out) is a sure sign; outdated design or style that doesn’t blend well with the rest of the home
  • Effort — cleaning is a major hassle and another chore to be avoided; replacement parts are hard to find or even non-existent

While it can be a large investment for homeowners, not only will they enjoy increased comfort and aesthetically-pleasing windows, but the U.S. Department of Energy says that installing high-performance windows will help with energy savings. Additionally, Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value report indicates that an estimated 79 percent of the cost will be recouped when the home is sold.

Pella provides a variety of window options, including the recently launched Pella 250 Series which offers single-hung, double-hung and sliding window styles that are energy-efficient and meet or exceed ENERGY STAR® guidelines in all 50 states across the USA.
