How Much Is That Leg Lamp in the Window?

While searching for signs of this weekend, I peeked in the window of the on Main Street and saw a different sign.

“Looking to buy your own leg lamp?” the sign read.

I wondered what that meant and then I looked up to see a young girl peering in the window. And there it was—a giant leg lamp resembling the one in the classic “A Christmas Story” movie.

Nancy Giera, who owns the store with her husband, Walter, said they’ve put the lamp in the window every year for about the last five years.

“Every year everybody asks, ‘Are you gonna bring the leg lamp back?’ ” she said.

Giera said they’d planned to put up a different display the second year, but people kept asking for the lamp, so they brought it back.

Giera said they always liked the movie and thought it would be something fun to do. They started looking online and found that the guy who bought the house where the movie was filmed restored the home and started making leg lamps to sell.

They got in touch with him to buy the lamp and the rest is history.

Giera said every year people have asked them how they can buy a similar lamp, but there isn't space to keep them in the store. So this year, their website includes a link to let people know how they can purchase the lamp.

She said each year they do something different in the window, though the lamp is always a part of that display.

This year, in honor of the movie, “The Muppets,” they have Kermit the Frog on display, wearing a Santa hat, of course. And since her husband’s name is Walter and he makes ice cream, in honor of the new muppet character Walter, they have a display of Walter the Muppet making ice cream.
