Man Injured in Shooting Jailed on Warrants

Annapolis Police say two suspects traded gunshots Saturday night; one was injured and treated at a hospital before being jailed.

An Annapolis man shot Saturday night also fired gunshots during the exchange, say police, who are searching for a suspect.

Shots were fired in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive just after 11 p.m. Satuday. Officers found Kwazia Mitchell, 22, of Glen Burnie at the scene; he had been shot once in the leg.

Mitchell told investigators he was standing in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive when an unknown suspect started shooting at him. He was taken to the University of Maryland Hospital Shock Trauma, where he was treated and released.

Police say Mitchell had two outstanding warrants, one for failing to appear in court for driving offenses and one for a violation of probation on a destruction of property conviction. After he was released from Shock Trauma, he was arrested on the warrants.

Detectives say they determined that Mitchell was also shooting during the incident. He was charged with discharging a firearm and related offenses. He is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center on a temporary commitment.
