ANNAPOLIS, MD — The U.S. Naval Academy will host its annual Ship Selection Night on Thursday.

At the event, about 280 midshipmen in the class of 2022 will choose which vessel they'll serve on after Commissioning Week. The midshipmen make their selections based on their preferred type of vessel and its homeport.

Midshipmen make their picks by their order of merit. They can only choose from the vessels remaining on the board when it's their turn.

Friends and ship representatives will then congratulate the soon-to-be surface warfare officers. Midshipmen will report to their vessels after their May 27 graduation.

Ship Selection Night is only open to invited guests.
