New Traffic Signal System Coming to Annapolis Intersection Monday

The upgraded traffic signal on MD 70 and Calvert Street blends in with the historic Maryland Statehouse.

A new, $217,000 traffic signal system will be implemented at the intersection of MD 70 (Rowe Boulevard) and Calvert Street on Monday.

The Maryland Statehouse in Annapolis is the oldest State Capitol in legislative use. Officials wanted to ensure the traffic signal upgrade not only helped make roads safer for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians, but also matched the historic area aesthetically.

“Rowe Boulevard is more than just a road, it is the gateway into Maryland’s Capital City,” House Speaker Michael E. Busch said in a news release. “It was crucial to all of us who call this great city home that we develop a project befitting of this important entrance to Annapolis.”

“With completion of work, tourists, legislators and residents traveling along Rowe Boulevard will enjoy all the historic scenery our Capital City has to offer,” Busch said.

The Maryland State Highway Administration converted the old wire-span signals into a pedestal-mounted LED traffic signal system that includes audible countdown pedestrian crossing controls and sidewalk ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

“I appreciate the extra effort by the State Highway Administration to work with City of Annapolis officials to modify this project to better blend in with the historic elements of the City,” said Senate President MIchael V. Miller. “Enhancing the historic view along Rowe Boulevard, while improving traffic safety, is a win-win for everyone.”

The new system is scheduled to activate Monday morning, weather permitting. The SHA reminds drivers to be cautious and patient as people adjust to the new signals. Crew members will still be working in the area to remove old poles and wires.
