The department issued a release about 11:15 p.m. Friday saying an arrest was made earlier in the day in the case of an Anne Arundel County Police officer. The unidentified officer has undergone several surgeries at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where he remains in critical condition, according to police spokesman Lt. T.J. Smith.

The suspect -- Colvin Lamar White, 30 of the 1600 block of Clay Hill Road in Annapolis -- was located about 9 a.m. in the 1800 block of Meade Village Circle in Severn, police say.

White is being held at the Anne Arundel County Detention Center without bond on charges of attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, use of a firearm in felony/violent crime, handgun on a person, regulated firearm/illegal possession, conspiracy to commit robbery, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery.

Police Chief Timothy Altomare thanked “everyone for their continued prayers and support.”

The shooting occurred about 2 a.m. in the area of 720 College Parkway East. Officers went to the address to check on the injured officer when he failed to respond to his radio.

Police say the officer went to the 7-Eleven store for a routine business check, and was told that a person outside the store was acting in a suspicious manner. When the officer went to investigate, there was an altercation with White.

Witnesses said they heard at least one gunshot when the armed suspect apparently shot the officer and fled the scene. Smith says the suspect did not use the officer’s weapon to shoot him.

The officer was shot in the upper body in an area that is not covered by his police vest, WTOP reports.

Numerous units and 43 members of the county’s police recruit class responded to search for the suspect and evidence.

Smith says this is the first Anne Arundel County Police officer to be shot in the line of duty since July of 2008, when an officer was shot in Brooklyn Park. There has never been a fatal shooting in the department’s history.

Anyone with information about the officer’s shooting is asked tocontact Detective Jason Dipietro at 410-222-3415 or the Tip Line at 410-222-4700. Or contact Metro Crime Stoppers at 1-866-7LOCKUP or Text “MCS plus your message” to CRIMES (274637).
