Over-the-air MPT viewers should rescan their TVs starting Aug. 2
Viewers using antennas will need to rescan TVs to find MPT stations in Annapolis, Oakland, and Salisbury

Maryland Public Television (MPT) stations WMPT 22 in Annapolis, WGPT 36 in Oakland, and WCPB 28 in Salisbury are moving broadcast frequencies on Friday, August 2 at 12:01 a.m. Viewers who watch TV for free with an over-the-air antenna must rescan their TVs to continue watching those stations beginning on that day.
MPT's chief technology officer, George Beneman, will appear on the network's weekly program Your Money & Business on Thursday, August 1. He'll be interviewed by host Jeff Salkin about the TV re-scanning task over-the-air viewers will need to perform. The program airs at 7 p.m.
Other TV broadcasters across the region will also be changing their broadcast frequencies, and these changes are being made in compliance with requirements from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

Rescanning is a process during which a TV searches to find all of the channels available in the local area. When the rescan is complete, viewers will still find their MPT station on the same channel number under the new frequency. Viewers do not need to purchase new equipment or services and those who watch MPT through a cable or satellite service will not need to perform a rescan because their service provider will do it for them.
To perform the rescan on Friday, August 2 or after, select "scan" or "autotune" on the TV or converter box control menu to start the scanning process. Instructions are usually available by pressing the "set-up" or "menu" buttons on the TV remote control. The channel number viewers know will not change.

A number of area TV stations are changing frequencies at different times as required by the Federal Communications Commission. This means viewers who use an antenna may have to rescan their TV sets more than once. Other stations in the MPT statewide network plan to move frequencies on the following dates:
- March 3, 2020 (tentative): WMPB, channel 67 in Owings Mills
- March 3, 2020 (tentative): WWPB, channel 31 in Hagerstown
