For a more informal look, consider trying painted stair runners. They create the illusion of a runner, but are a lot more casual. And, the design options are unlimited.
They're perfect for the traditional house, a country-style home or a vacation retreat. Painted runners are cheaper than carpet and can be done yourself. You just need a little time, patience and attention to detail.
Before painting, fill in the cracks with wood filler, sand the surface smooth and apply primer if the surface has not been painted before.
Allow about 4 inches between each edge of the runner and the wall. Increase this amount if the staircase is wider than normal.
Tho assure clean edges, apply blue painter's tape to the staircase before painting.
To keep the paint from seeping under the tape, brush some base color along the edge to "seal"it. Then allow it to dry before applying accent color.
Have a fun with your new project of stair runner painting!
