Snowy Owl Perched On Roof + Blue Heron Enjoys Fresh Catch: MD Photos Of The Week

MARYLAND — Welcome back to Maryland's weekly photo story! This time around, Patch asked readers to share pictures of wildlife. Let's take a look at the top shots from around the state.

First up is this picture of a great blue heron and its catch. John Pierce took this one at Lake Frank in Montgomery County.

Laura Lechtzin photographed these splashing mallard and canvasback ducks along the Choptank River in Cambridge.

Michele Egan snapped this picture of deer in her Rockville backyard.

Frank Jackman spotted these two young owls in his Kensington backyard last spring. Jackman was eating lunch outside when he noticed movement in the trees. He watched one owl fly away before he saw these two sitting on the branch.

Michael Oberman calls this one "Snowy Owl." He snapped the photo a few weeks ago in Cambridge.

Oberman saw a birdwatcher in the street with a scope aimed at a house, so he struck up a conversation with the man. It turns out he taught at Salisbury University.

Oberman and his new acquaintance got permission from the homeowner to take pictures from the backyard. This was the result.
