I found these birds in a park about three years ago, and they've been visiting each year since then. At the time, the Trumpeter Swan Society said they were juveniles, too young to mate. It appeared as though they might mate last year, but it didn't happen. There is only one recorded instance of Trumpeters breeding in MD, last year on Hart-Miller island. One Cygnet was raised.
They started building a nest last month, an elaborate ritual that might take weeks. I've been visiting several times a week to keep tabs, and this morning I found the Cygnets who were probably hatched a day or two ago. They should reach the fledgling stage in 3-4 months.
