Red-necked Grebes, Champions of the Deep

A World Beneath the Waves

Red-necked Grebes are phenomenal divers, perfectly adapted for life underwater. Their streamlined bodies minimize resistance in the water, while their powerful lobed feet propel them with impressive speed. Unlike ducks that dabble at the surface, Red-necked Grebes readily plunge into the depths, searching for food in murky waters. They can remain submerged for extended periods, expertly maneuvering through the underwater world. Witnessing a Red-necked Grebe disappear beneath the surface in a flurry of bubbles, only to resurface moments later with a wriggling fish in its beak, reveals their mastery of the underwater realm. Red-necked Grebes are not picky eaters, but their diet primarily consists of aquatic creatures. They readily consume a variety of fish, crustaceans, and aquatic insects. Their sharp beaks are perfectly adapted for spearing fish and catching invertebrates in the depths. They are also skilled hunters, chasing down their prey with impressive agility underwater. Observing a Red-necked Grebe stalking its prey with a focused gaze, then diving with lightning speed to secure a meal, reveals their impressive hunting prowess. We'rmoe likely to find this migrant during cold winters. Try Thomas Point Park.
