Runners never forget sacrifices of first responders

Every year volunteers, runners and sponsors join together under the auspices of the Travis Manion Foundation for the 9/11 Heroes Run.

Every year the “hearts and hands” of many volunteers, runners and sponsors join together under the auspices of the Travis Manion Foundation for 9/11 Heroes Runs. Everyone involved in the runs remembers the sacrifices of the Sept. 11 heroes and the sacrifices of the more recent military members, veterans, civilians and first responders.

During September more than 60,000 people are expected to walk, run and ruck in Heroes Runs held in 70 locations around the world. One of those runs -- the Annapolis Heroes Run -- was held Sept. 22 at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. About 2,500 people participated. They were asked to remember “five simple words: If not me, then who?”

Although the temperature was around 90 degrees, it didn’t dent the enthusiasm of the runners. They were asked, “Who’s ready to run?” Everyone was. A 5K was followed by a one-mile fun run.

The color guard from the United States Navy League Cadet Corps Training Ship Reina Mercedes participated in the opening ceremony. Runners included firemen, policemen, midshipmen, and military personnel. Members of running groups and running enthusiasts also participated.

Special mention was given to the roughly 250 volunteers who assisted with the event, among them members of the Navy wrestling, sprint football and rugby teams, the Naval Academy Athletic Association, and local members of the police and fire departments and other first responders.
