Learn about native seafood culture. Hike past old gold mines. Attend a folk festival. These events will connect you with Maryland's nature.

MARYLAND — Maryland has several outdoor events that will put you in touch with nature. There's a lesson on native seafood, a hike past old gold mines and an Eastern Shore festival.
Patch recently partnered with several local organizations to bring you their latest news. This guest contribution comes from National Park Service Chesapeake Gateways and Chesapeake Conservancy. Here's what Jody Hedeman Couser submitted to help you explore the Chesapeake Bay:
"Delmarvalous Festival
The Ward Museum’s one-of-a-kind, one-day folklife festival is back and in-person this year – and it’s totally free to attend! The festival will feature a variety of live music, talks, demonstrations, games and unique offerings from local artists and makers. You'll be able to make your own kite, watch a professional sandcastle sculptor in action, learn about blacksmithing, watch close-up demos of crab picking, distilling, fiber arts, candle making, decoy carving and so much more! The festival will kick off at 9:00 am with a special opening ceremony led by Chief Donna Wolf Mother Abbott of the Nause-Waiwash Indians. August 14, 9:00 am to 4:00 pm; Ward Museum, Salisbury, MD. Gold Mine Circuit Hike at Great Falls
Join the Sierra Club for a moderate level hike featuring an eight-mile circuit hike in two loops that pass through several gold mining sites that were in operation at various times between 1867 and 1951. The hike includes an overlook of Great Falls and a short section of the C&O Canal. Free, but donations are welcomed. August 27, 10:00 am to 2:00 pm; C&O Canal National Historical Park, Potomac, MD. Seafood Cooking Demonstration
Learn about the long history of eel and other seafood in the Potomac River and how the many cultures along the river have subsisted on seafood. Chef Terrance Murphy will be preparing a dish inspired by the traditional foods of this region using a mix of seasonal and foraged ingredients. Registrants will receive a recipe card. Drop in anytime between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm for this free program. The demonstration takes place outdoors on the National Colonial Farm, Accokeek, MD. August 14. More info."
