Attempted Rape – 100 block of Duke of Gloucester St – 04/25 at 2:15am: A man reportedly followed a woman he met Saturday night and attempted to rape her in the parking lot of St. Mary’s Church, but her screams for help drew bystanders and the man fled, Annapolis Police say.

The suspect was identified as Marcus Snipes, 23, of Severn. Snipes was arrested and charged with attempted rape, attempted sex offense, assault, reckless endangerment, and false imprisonment.

Officers say the woman, 31, from Pasadena, was assisted by several bystanders. The woman told officers she was out with friends that evening when she became acquainted with Snipes. He reportedly followed the woman and her friends when they visited several bars.

Snipes offered the victim a ride home and walked her to the parking lot behind 109 Duke of Gloucester St. Once in the parking lot Snipes attempted to rape the woman next to a vehicle parked on the lot, according to police.

A bystander heard the woman’s screams and called the police. Two women who heard the screaming also went to help the victim. They tried to hold Snipes until officers arrived, but Snipes was able to run away.

Officers eventually discovered Snipes sitting in a chair in the rear yard of a home in the unit block of Shipwright Street, police say.

Snipes was identified as the suspect and arrested. He is being held at the Jennifer Road Detention Center without bond.

“The quick and decisive actions of our citizens helped stop this attack,” said Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop, “and with their help our officers responded swiftly to find the suspect.”
