SPCA Hosts 'Black Furday' Sale

Staff at found a unique way to be a part of Black Friday.

As noted on the organization's website, “all black (or slightly black) animals” will be half-priced. This deal applies to all qualified applicants.

In addition, the SPCA is holding a merchandise sale on Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. According to the website, sale items include SPCA merchandise, cages, toys and other pet products.

Sue Beatty, executive director of the county SPCA, said via email that she heard about an animal shelter on the west coast having a sale on Black Friday and liked the idea.

“We held it in 2009 just for black animals—but didn't have a big merchandise sale as well. We (decided) this year to make it really big and we have lots of great animals hoping for new homes as well as great merchandise for sale,” Beatty said in the email.

The sale applies to all animals and they just need to have a "hint" of black fur, according to Beatty.

In order to qualify for pet adoption, potential owners are asked to fill out an application. The application can be accessed online and filled out ahead of time or customers can pick one up and fill it out when they come in. It could take several days for the application to be reviewed, according to Beatty.

“As long as the person or family is aware of the commitment required in owning a pet, the holidays can be a good time to adopt one,” Beatty said.

She added that since people tend to be home more during the holiday season, it’s also a good time to spend getting the pet adjusted to its new home.
