Speeding Trash Truck Plowed Into Arnold Woman's Car, Charges Pending: Police

Anne Arundel County Police have released the names of seven drivers involved in a fatal Pasadena crash; charges are pending.

Pasadena, MD — An Abingdon man driving a speeding trash truck plowed into six cars Thursday in a crash that killed an Arnold woman, authorities said.

Anne Arundel County Police on Friday released the names of the victim and all the drivers involved in the pileup about 2 p.m. on southbound Route 2 (Ritchie Highway) at Jumpers Hole Road.

Numerous witnesses reported the 2001 Mack trash truck driven by Robert Peter Neal, 55, of Abingdon was southbound on Ritchie Highway approaching Jumpers Hole Road. The truck, owned by Bay Area Disposal of Owings, hit the back of a 2014 Honda Accord driven by Janet Ellen Stomps, 44, of Arnold.

The force of the crash drove the Accord forward as the trash truck plowed into five other cars. Police say there is no evidence that the truck driver was braking or making any evasive maneuvers at the time of the crash.

Neal was taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore as a precaution, while Stomps died at the scene. Her body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore.

The preliminary cause of the crash is Neal’s failure to reduce speed to avoid a collision and driving at a speed greater than reasonable and prudent, according to police.

Traffic Safety is handling the investigation and any charges are pending review by the Anne Arundel County state’s attorney.
