Stop Stockpiling Masks, Sanitizer For Coronavirus: Officials

"Please do not stockpile supplies such as hand sanitizers or masks," Anne Arundel County executive Steuart Pittman asks of residents.

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Anne Arundel County officials are urging residents to remain vigilant in washing their hands and to stop buying face masks in light of the spread of the new coronavirus. Maryland's first three cases of the virus were confirmed by Gov. Larry Hogan on Thursday; all three people live in Montgomery County. Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman shared on Facebook that three COVID-19 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Maryland as of March 6 and county officials continue to "closely monitor potential developments."

"Please do not stockpile supplies such as hand sanitizers or masks. Masks are not needed for the general public. They are only useful, for instance, in a clinic waiting room or other higher-risk environment, to help prevent someone who already has a respiratory illness from spreading it to others," Pittman wrote.

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health also noted on its Facebook page that "face masks are not recommended for the general public."
